The days are getting shorter and the nights are getting colder. Winter is basically here in Thunder Bay. Just when you thought your cell phone couldn’t be any more important, GM adds a fun new feature for their new 2014 line. Remote start and key link fobs through an app on your smart phone will remotely unlock/lock and start your truck. It can also activate the horn and turn on the lights.
This may seem like a mundane feature, but think about that the next time you run out to warm up your truck in the morning when its -20 out. Just imagine being able to do this from the comfort of your home or office. You also don’t have to worry about locking your keys in the car or worrying if you forgot to lock the doors. The service actually works better than many after market key ring remote start systems.
GM is using RemoteLink Key Fob Services app. This is a downloadable app that utilizes the OnStar network. Yes, I know what your thinking, do I have to pay for the OnStar services? The answer is no for the first 5 years from the delivery date of the vehicle. However, if you do subscribe to the OnStar service, you can get other cool options like monitoring the car or truck’s operating systems, fuel range, MPG, and tire pressure.
Thank you GM for providing another free feature that I will undoubtably never to be able to live with out again. There is but one small catch. If you do not have cell service or wireless connection, the app will not be able to connect to OnStar. With most of us having more reliable service these days, this should not be a major problem. Already have a GM vehicle? Well you are still in luck too. There are many after market products you can look into.
